5 Book Series I Couldn't Put Down [Part 3]

Book series number three was just completed in August. I haven't read it yet because my TBR is giant. However, I fell in love with this book series strictly because of the book cover at first. I felt like small me was definitely seen and could be Amari. So this book has a special place in my heart. It's also a fun supernatural series with magic, missing siblings, and so many mysteries. Book 1 was chosen as a Bluebonnet Award book for 2022-2023.

Supernatural InvestigationsĀ Series by B.B. Alston

Quinton Peters was the golden boy of the Rosewood low-income housing projects, receiving full scholarship offers to two different Ivy League schools. When he mysteriously goes missing, his little sister, 13-year-old Amari Peters, canā€™t understand why itā€™s not a bigger deal. Why isnā€™t his story all over the news? And why do the police automatically assume he was into something illegal?
Then Amari discovers a ticking briefcase in her brotherā€™s old closet. A briefcase meant for her eyes only. There was far more to Quinton, it seems, than she ever knew. Heā€™s left her a nomination for a summer tryout at the secretive Bureau of Supernatural Affairs. Amari is certain the answer to finding out what happened to him lies somewhere inside, if only she can get her head around the idea of mermaids, dwarves, yetis and magicians all being real things, something she has to instantly confront when she is given a weredragon as a roommate.
Amari must compete against some of the nationā€™s wealthiest kidsā€”whoā€™ve known about the supernatural world their whole lives and are able to easily answer questions like which two Great Beasts reside in the Atlantic Ocean and how old is Merlin? Just getting around the Bureau is a lesson alone for Amari with signs like ā€˜Department of Hidden Places this way, or is it?ā€™ If that all wasnā€™t enough, every Bureau trainee has a talent enhanced to supernatural levels to help them do their jobs ā€“ but Amari is given an illegal ability. As if she needed something else to make her stand out.
With an evil magican threatening the whole supernatural world, and her own classmates thinking she is an enemy, Amari has never felt more alone. But if she doesnā€™t pass the three tryouts, she may never find out what happened to Quinton.
After finding her brother and saving the entire supernatural world, Amari Peters is convinced her first full summer as a Junior Agent will be a breeze.
But between the fearsome new Head Ministerā€™s strict anti-magician agenda, fierce Junior Agent rivalries, and her brother Quintonā€™s curse steadily worsening, Amariā€™s plate is full. So when the secretive League of Magicians offers her a chance to stand up for magiciankind as its new leader, she declines. Sheā€™s got enough to worry about!
But her refusal allows someone else to step forward, a magician with dangerous plans for the League. This challenge sparks the start of the Great Game, a competition to decide who will become the Night Brothersā€™ successor and determine the future of magiciankind.
The Great Game is both mysterious and deadly, but among the winnerā€™s magical rewards is Quintonā€™s last hopeā€”so how can Amari refuse?

Book three Amari and the Despicable Wonders

War has come to the supernatural world, and Amariā€™s two worst enemies are leading the charge.
Elaine Harlowe has manipulated her way into becoming prime minister, using her mind control ability to force the Bureau to take up her vicious grudge against magiciankind. Meanwhile, Dylan Van Helsing, the newly crowned leader of the League of Magiciansā€”and Amariā€™s former partnerā€”is after a destructive new power that would not only ensure the magiciansā€™ victory . . . it would make him invincible.
With neither the Bureau nor the League safe for Amari, and her newly returned brother, Quinton, determined to keep her out of the fray, she and her friends decide to find a way to end the war on their own.
So when they learn that the only way to stop Dylan is to find powerful magical inventions known as Wonders, they go after them. But wielding these items comes at a terrible cost, and Amari will have to decide just how much sheā€™s willing to sacrifice . . . because the Despicable Wonders will demand everything.

The first book can be found in the library (JUV FIC ALS SUP #1), as an e-book, and as an audiobook via Libby Lone Star Digital Library.
