Smokey, the Bear (Only YOU can prevent forest fires!) will turn 80 on August 9th and challenges Readers to explore such topics as wildfire prevention, forests, camping safety, natural resource careers, environment, ecology and nature sciences.
Like the summer reading program, readers join in the fun by reading and earning tickets which can be traded in for various prizes. On the 9th of August, we began the challenge with Smokey the Bear coloring pages, puzzles, assorted activities around the library, and a scavenger hunt to celebrate Smokey’s birthday!
Smokey was a real bear, and named "Smokey" due to being rescued from a forest fire. His image was adopted as a forestry service mascot for fire safety, and this became known as Smokey Bear or Smokey the Bear.
To participate in the challenge, pick up a Smokey Bear Reading Log. Take the Smokey Bear Pledge, then do at least 5 of the 8 challenges on the log. One of the challenges, reading at least 3 books about wildfire prevention, nature things or the environment, is a must-do, and then you have a choice of 4 other "badges." To earn a badge, just do at least one task from each of the badges (log sections--there are 7 on the back of the log). All that will get you an official stamped Smokey Certificate and twenty tickets!
Now, if you want to have even more fun and earn more activity tickets, you can continue and save up for those library store prizes!
For accomplishing the minimum/basic Smokey Challenge, you'll get 20 tickets.
For each badge beyond the minimum, you can earn 3 tickets. (there are 3 extra badges!)
For each extra Smokey book you read (beyond the first three) you'll earn 5
more tickets!!
For each extra task you complete, you get 2 tickets (every badge has 5 tasks!). You need to be able to show us in some way that you've completed a task (so be ready for questions and show us your work!).
For finishing the entire log--all the badge tasks and reading--instead of doing just a few more tasks or badges, you could make 100 tickets! (wow)
For attending Smokey the Bear library programs, you could also get tickets!
When you are done with the challenge, turn in your log, and you'll receive your Smokey Bear certificate and tickets for the library prize store. The National Smokey Bear Challenge continues through November 28th, 2024, so you have plenty of time to explore nature, environmental safety and to save up those points to spend!
