Summer at the Library

Summer at the library, it's where you want to be.  I've heard chatter on the street that the "Leon Valley Public Library is where you want to go if you have kids, the programs are great!"  I'm truly hoping that is a commonly held thought, we sure do try!  This summer, the sky is the limit!

We are working hard and fast to get everything together and out, but there never seems to be enough time to do it all.  So, here's a tip/secret.  Watch our website and the calendar feature.  In very rare instances, events will shift a bit if they are over a month out, but in general, when it hits that calendar (and we do try to get things on as soon as they book) they are a GO!  You can always be a bit ahead of the game keeping an eye there.  We are using Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as well as our website and it can be hard to keep all updated, but know that the website always has it.  Facebook follows closely behind.

The theme this summer is BUILD A BETTER WORLD and build it or create it, we sure will!  There will be a LOT of focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) events.  We will be building a better world through kindness and have a class on Manners and Etiquette for the kids as well as having a community wide project of making blankets for the terminally ill.  Other projects are in the works in this line as well.

I'm extremely excited about a few upcoming events that you NEED to put on your calendar:

Friday, June 9 from 9:30am - 11am:  Explore the Natural Area with a Geologist and Archaeologist.  Park in the large parking lot for Raymond Rimkus Park and we will be meeting at a picnic table (look for the balloons).  We will open by looking at fossils and other artifacts that have been found in the area and nearby. Then....on with our hike.  Three very important things:  wear comfy shoes, bring water, and cell phones MUST be turned off or left in your vehicle.

Saturday, June 10 from 10:30am - 12:30pm:  Summer Reading MakerSpace/KickOff Event.  Come BUILD A BETTER WORLD with us through hands on STEAM activities.  This morning we will start distributing the reading logs for our Summer Reading Program (SRP) which is open to ALL AGES.  Yes teens and adults, we have special bookmarks for you to record your reading and win weekly prizes as well!  This event will take over the children's area and the meeting space and include 3D Design and Printing, Snap Circuits, Ozobots, Video Creation and much much more.  We will have activities for all ages from the littles to the not so littles!

Tuesday, June 13 from 4pm - 6pm:  The DoSeum presents CODING CHALLENGE!  We are thrilled to have the DoSeum and AmeriCorps present an incredible hands-on, active event for our community.  Moana, MineCraft, Super Heroes.....just SOME of the coding fun you will find with us.  DO NOT MISS, it's not every day we get to have the DoSeum come to us!

Wednesday, June 14 from 1pm - 2pm:  Balloon Twisting presented by Christopher Twist!  Who doesn't like balloon art?  We have our very own, private balloon artist today who will entertain all, come learn and get some balloon art!

Saturday, June 17 from 11am - 12noon:  Manners and Etiquette for kids presented by Miss Heather of Little Miss Manners Etiquette School.  This class is for boys and girls aged 5 and up.  Yes, we know some younger siblings may come along, that's fine.  Seating is limited to 48 so kids will have first priority, don't miss out!

Tuesday, June 20 from 10:30am - 11:30am: Building a mini Greenhouse presented by the Forest Oaks Garden Club.  This hands on class is geared to children.  We will be talking about growing plants and how they create a better world for everyone.

Friday, June 23 from 10am - 2pm: Trailblazer STEM hands on museum truck at LVPL.  This is science on wheels, a 40' truck/museum filled with hands on activities in the field of STEM.  The Tocker Foundation presented a grant to the LVPL in the way of bringing one of the two trucks in Texas to us this summer.  NOT TO MISS!!!

Friday, June 23 from 4pm - 6pm: TEEN KARAOKE!   Calling all preteens and teens.....come have fun with the open mic!  Food will be served (who doesn't like the draw of food) and outrageous fun will prevail!

Get those creative juices flowing as the first week of August will see our meeting room set aside for OUT OF THE BOX - we challenge you to use boxes and all the assorted goodies we will provide to create a master piece!  Collaborate throughout the week, we will be leaving everything up so that creations can be built upon, added to, expanded.....this is a community event, come play with us!

I cannot stress enough that the above is just a tiny portion of the summer.  We will have a minimum of one event a day.  We are currently preparing calendars and information sheets on events which will continue through the entire summer.  Kids, teens, adults.....the action is at the Leon Valley Public Library this summer, hope to see you here!
